Discussion
Consider the graph of the linear equation 2x+3y=6
The set of ordered pair which satisfy the equation are (-3, 4) (0, 2) (3,
0) (6,-2).
Notice that
two of the ordered pairs have zero as one of their coordinates. The points
whose coordinates consist of the no. pair (0, 2) intersect the y- axis thus the
ordinates two of this point is called the y intercept. The points whose
coordinates consist of the no. pair (3, 0) intersects the x - axis, thus the
abscissa 3 of this point is called the x- intercept.
Illustrative Example:
Find the x and y intercept of
the graph of 5x + 3y = 15
To find the
x – intercept
Let y = 0
5x + 3y = 15
5x + 3(0) =
15
5x = 15
X = 3
The x-
intercept is 3. The graph crosses the x- axis at (3, 0)
To find the
y - intercept
Let x = 0
5x + 3y =15
5(0) + 3y
=15
3y = 15
Y =5
The y-
intercept is 5. The graph crosses the y – axis at (0, 5)
IV. Generalization
The
x intercept and the abscissa of the point
(a, o) where a graph intersect
the x –axis. The y intercept is the
ordinate of the point (0, b) where a graph intersects the y – axis.
V. Evaluation
Find
the x and y intercept for each of the following:
1. 2x
+ y = 6
2. 5x
+ 3 = y
3. y
= 6x + 3
4. 3x
– 7 = y
5.
5x +y =10
VI. Assignment
Find
the x and y intercept for each of the following:
1. 3x
– 6y = 12
2. 5x
+ y = 10
3. 8x
+ y = 4
4. y
= 4x -2
5.
y = 1/2 x +5
