E.      Discussion

There are 4 kinds of drama/play

TRAGEDY

A play to be identified as tragedy must contain the following requirements:
1. Concerns a serious subject
2. The hero or protagonist must be a person of heroic proportions.
3. No great reliance should be placed on chance or coincidence; the incidents must be honest. Whatever should happen must happen.
4. Pity and fear are the basic emotions of the play:
Pity for the protagonist in his suffering
Fear that the same trial may come to us.

                          COMEDY

You may have believed that all comedies concern light subjects. This is not the
case, as seen in the following characteristics of a comedy play.

                A. The play must concern a serious subject or  a light one.
                                                B. It concerns events that are both possible and probable.
                C. What happens grows out of character and not situation.
                D. The laughter it evokes is a kind of “thoughtful” laughter.

MELODRAMA

Is related to tragedy in that it concerns a serious subject.

The characteristics of melodrama are:

1. It treats a serious subject, but the characters are not as pathetic as those in tragedy.
2. The element of chance enters.
3. The emotion of pity is provoked, but it tends toward sentimentality. Little if any fear
                  evoked.
4. The hero usually wins the battle

FARCE

The characters and incidents in a farce are exaggerated, and the emphasis is on
                       plot rather than characterization.

The characteristics of Farce are:

1. The events and characteristics are possible, but not very probable.
2. It evokes riotous laughter.
3. It is episodic, calling for credibility only for the moment.
                                        4. What happens is an effect of the situation, not character.
